Nalu Surfboards 98 Lyntton Road East ... one Brisbane, Qld. 1972 to 1974 Contributed with thanks, by Les Purcell, April 23, 2003: Tony Biltoft who owned Nalu Surfboards, in Brisbane 1972 to 1973 when he died. There was a Memorial Contest for him for many years following. Contributed with thanks, by Kim Hancock, December, 2011 (edited): Nalu surfboards were built by Tony Biltoft and his 2 younger brothers, he learnt to shape at Adlers in Brisbane for 2 years and then went it alone. He was building a good cliental untill on I think it was Sepetember 1974 his finish room exploded tragicaly burning him to death, the buisness did not continue.. I think the guy who mentioned Sharlin surfboards having a fire was possible thinking of Nalu. Shaun emailed July 2010: Hi, just thought I would drop you a quick line about `SHARLEN` Surfboards . Had one in the early 70`s . They were made by two brothers in East Brisbane , Queensland . They had a small surfshop there and the factory was nearby . As far as I can recollect there was a fire at the factory and one of the brothers was killed in the glassing room ? Or so the story goes ?? After that the shop closed down and that was the last I heard of the brand. Noted: Advertisement in Tracks Number 44 March 1974. |

Design Surfboards Michael Peterson Surfboards Dimentional Surf Design Queensland ? Ivanhoe, Victoria? 1975 Michael Peterson (MP) Decal, left, and edited notes thanks to Anonymous, September 2020: I’ve owned (this board) for some 20 plus years. Members of the MP Vintage Board Facebook page referenced your site - they thought made about 1974 /1975. The board has the MP - 1 initials near the fin. It was suggested that it is a Natural Design board from Ivanhoe, Victoria, but I’m not sure this is correct. See Natural Design (Ivanhoe), below. Also see Michael Peterson Surfboards. The second decal, appears to be in two sections; the Natural Design - Shaped by Michael Peterson possibly trimmed from the top decal, laminated above the Dimentional Surf Design. Note that dimentional is not a real word, perhaps a misspelling of dimensional? Other significant misspellings include the John Arnold Surfboards Involment model, later corrected to Involvement, and McCoy Surfboards Reno Abelliro model, actually Abellira. |

Neilsen Surfboards, Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads, Queensland. The sons of Surfer Paradise's first professional life guard Bill Neilsen, Paul and his brother Rick both were introduced to surfing at an early age. The company was started by the Paul and Rick Neilsen, after working for local board builder, Hohensee Surfboards. The brother's local reputation was enhanced by their domination at Burleigh Heads and nationally by Paul's contest success, with the accompanying media exposure. He was second in the 1970 Bobby Brown Memorial Contest at Cronulla and first in the1971 Australian Titles at Bells Beach. The following year he took first place in the Smirnoff Contest held at Sunset Beach, and was a finalist in the 1972 Hang Ten Pro and the 1976 Rip Curl Bells. 1970 Paul Neilsen Rick Neilsen Centre Atcade, Surfers Paradise Sportman Avenue, Mermaid Beach, Queensland 1972 Australian Champion Model Decals courtesy of Will Chance, March 2017. 1972 Jeff Hakman Model 1974 Da Sting - Designed by Apia - Bertelman Hawaii 1976 Darryl Bulger and Richard Harvey; 1977 and Nev Hyman; 1979 Tony Etherington, Paul and Rick Neilsen, Mark Loveridge and KKK; Stingray model by Rick Neilsen - swallow tail flyer with twin fin boxes. 1980 Gunther Rohn; 1982 Mark Loveridge 1985 Nev Hyman 1986 Phil Grace Tony Dempsey 1987 Mark Loveridge Dale Chapman 1989 Phil Myers Vent System |

New Oceanic Surfboards. [Max Gill] Melbourne circa 1964-6? Geoff Smith reports one board : On the stringer at the tail is pencilled 996 (so presumably they made a few boards), Gill (purchaser /shaper?) and 9'3". It also has a Waverley Beach permit sticker (sorry can't remember the year) on the nose. Given the pencil marking "Gill", this may indicate an offshoot of Gill Surfboards, Owner/Shaper : Max Gill. emailed July, 2005 (edited)... re : Age, Nevada, Nivarna Surfboards. Your story is a little incorrect, here are the facts ... Alf Jeffries started AGE Surfboards....with Gary (Willer??? - not exactly sure of the surname) who ran the retail side at Bankstown, circa 1966 - 1967. Alf ran the factory at Lakemba, employees included Billy "Black Boy" Cilia. About 1971 - 1972, Alf changed the name to Nirvana Surfboards and later on moved the factory to Kinkumber. In the late 1970's, Alf sold Nivarna surfboards (proprietor unknown) and relocated to Western Australia. Bill Cilla was initally involved with Nevada Surfboards ("Lock and load" was the slogan in one magazine advertisement) and later bought Nirvana Surfboards. Alf Jefferies currently resides in Coffs Harbour. |
