McLelland Surfboards
1976
Newcastle
Bill Mclelland
Peter Cornish, Billy Robbo (Robinson/Roberts?)

Bill McLelland emailed the following (edited) notes in November 2005, with many thanks.
I made boards in Newcastle for 6 or 7 yrs in 1970s,  mainly for surfers in Newcastle area and mainly Merewether surfers.
Probably averaged 5 or 6 per week and did most on my own.
However Peter Cornish and Billy Robbo did shaping etc for a time.
Shaped and glassed some boards for Qld such as Aragorn S/b thru guys visiting from Kirra such as MP
Still see the odd mid 70s McLelland around mainly due to having had quite a famous local artist (in latter yrs) John Earle spray designs such as dolphins tubes etc in that period.
Very interesting to see the hundreds of old names from the 60s, 70s and 80s board makers and guys who shaped and who you surfed with and shared a beer with .names that haven't heard for 30yrs in some cases, like Grove.
My dad bought me one in Noosa in 1968 and Spirit of the Sea surfboards that a friend of mine bought from shop opposite Kirra in prob 1970.
Just a great site regards, Bill McLelland.

Denis McPherson

Peter emailed, September 2014 (edited):
The first McPherson decal had the text across the top of the topless mermaid and Angourie underneath.
Baddy Treloar has suggested the decal was drawn by either Robert or Geoff Waters.

The board (right) was shaped for me in 1971 or 1972, after I sold my Wilderness Chine Hull, the babe holding my board was my girlfriend at the time.
Denis was living at Palmers Island and working at the Clarence River Slipway as a fitter, before he started shaping boards full time, after moving up there from the south coast.

Dated about 1969, about when Wildness had started at Angourie-Yamba

The often photographed house,
captioned in some shots as the Wilderness "factory" at Palmers Channel, in one photo has a hand-written McTavish Surfing Tools sign against the front fence.

In response to an enquiry by Adrian in 2017, Bob McTavish wrote:
That sweet Country Soul … I made it at Palmers Channel near Yamba in 1969.
I shaped, Gary Keyes glassed it, Chris Brock sanded. I made the fin out of scrap.
Watch George Greenough's Innermost Limits you’ll see the old farm house factory, and us surfing those boards.
I have one too and value it highly..   Bob

Medusa Iota Surfboards
Details (edited) provided with thanks by Ross Summerell, July 2019.
Family garage at Bellevue Parade
, Hurstville NSW
R
ear of Palliers Bottle Shop, Princes Hwy, Blakehurst NSW.
1969
The first two Medusa Iota boards were made in the family garage at Bellevue Parade
, Hurstville NSW
They were shaped by Wes King,
glassed by Ross Summerell and jointly finished.
The
fins were provided by Jackson Surfboards.
1971
Factory: rear of Palliers Bottle Shop, Princes Hwy, Blakehurst NSW.
Only 22 boards were made here in a quadruple garage rented from Palliers.
All the guys were part-time on piece work and most worked in other board factories.
Shapers were Bob Hansen, Frank Latta and Jeremy Greaves.
Glasser was Ross Summerell, sanding and finishing by Terry O’Brien and Brian Almah, and fins provided by Jackson.
All boards were numbered and the sticker was a Medusa head in an oblong shape.
After the local council received a complaint over the dust emulating from the big garage, Palliers’ were forced to terminate the arrangement, which ended Medusa Iota’s short history.

The logo was not unlike the photo in the attachment with the words "Medusa Iota Surfboards" wrapped around the top, and "Blakehurst NSW" with a phone number wrapped around the bottom.

Donated some boards as prizes to Perth contests.
