Some images feature
bare female breasts, undoubtedly of interest to 19th century readers.
Generally, the more
this feature is detailed then the less informative the illustration.
The image is cropped from a full page illustration with other surfriders
and Diamond Head, published in
Stoddard, William
Charles : A Trip to Hawaii.
Oceanic Steamship
Company, San Francisco. 1895. page 35.
The only credit is to Schmit Litho Co., S.F.

1890s.
Anoynymus : Surf-riders at Waikiki.
Anoynymus :
"Surf-riders at Waikiki, circa 1890s."
Definitely not an image from personal observation.
It is probably a pastiche.
The riders are from one of the drawings by Wallace McKay (1874 - 1877)
and the wave possibly from Bainbrdge Hoff (1873) - both above.
Possibly influenced by early surf-riding photography and the growing
world-wide awareness of Hawaii as a tropical tourist destination, identified
by the image of Waikiki Beach framed by Diamond Head.
Compare and contrast with the image below.
No previous printing noted before (possibly Bishop Museum) ...

Highly realistic, except the rider is riding out to sea relative to
Diamond Head.
