UNCONSCIOUS IN SURF
Man Rescued at Bronte

John Henry Devlin, 22, of Concord Street, Strathfield, was rescued unconscious from the surf at Bronte yesterday, and was taken by Eastern Suburbs Ambulance to St. Vincent's Hospital.
Devlin was on a surf board 75 yards from the shore when a big wave threw him into the air and he lost his surf board.
He struggled against a strong undertow, but he was carried farther oui to sea.
Keith Wood, captain of Bronte Life-saving Club, went out to him with a lifebelt.
He seized Devlin, but they were separated by another wave.
Devlin again sank, and Jack Ganey, a member of the Bronte Life-saving Club, jumped off the rocks and swam
to him.
When Ganey and Wood reached Devlin he was unconscious, and they had a hard fight to lift him on to the rocks. All three was cut and bruised.
There were large crowds at all the surf beaches yesterday, and life-savers made a number of rescues.

LOCAL AND GENERAL
...
Body Recovered. —
Floating in the water some little distance from the beach the body of Brian Joseph Lacey, aged 19 years, of the R.A.A.F., was discovered on Monday morning.
Lacey had been swimming af the Back Beach at the rear of Mahomet's Flat on Thursday afternoon last with a companion.
They both had surf-boards and were in a heavy surf when Lacey suddenly disappeared.
His companion summoned assistance and an extensive search was conducted by air and water and by patrols operating along the beach.
The body was recovered about a mile-and-a-half south of the spot where Lacey was last seen in the water.
A report on the matter has been forwarded to the coroner (Mr. K. H. Parker).

Yamba Surf Club Strong Junior Membership Annual Meeting
...
The financial statement discloses that the finances of the club are again very sound, mainly due to the excellent way in which the members attended to the letting of surf boards the takings for which, doubled those of last season.
Special mention must be made of the permanent life saver in this direction, as it was through his efforts that quite
a considerable sum of the extra takings were collected.
Actually, I think he is the best life saver we have employed.
Within the next few weeks the surf boat will be returned to the shed in practically new condition.

On The Nile

Master Geoffrey King, of Taroona, gets a chatty letter, from WO Charles Bowling, attached tothe RAF in the Middle East:

We live on a houseboat when in Cairo.
 It is very comfortable.
There are always plenty of boats going up and down the Nile laden with all sorts of goods.
The people of Egypt use the Nile for transporting their products.
They use large, flat-bottomed barges which they call Falukas.

There is a good beach here, and we are having some surfing.
The natives make small surf boards which they hire out very cheaply.
With them we get some good runs on the waves.
Fee of 2/6 to Geoffrey King.
