CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The condition of the City Baths was touched on by several members.
The lack of lighting
facilities the bad
condition of the lavatories were stressed, while one member
said he had pulled out four doors or boards floating in the
water.
They had undoubtedly been
pulled on from some part as the nails were sticking in them,
and they had evidently been used as surf boards.

MASS RESCUE AT
MAROUBRA
SYDNEY, Sunday.—Lifesavers at Maroubra figured in a mass
rescue this afternoon when about 30 people simultaneously got
into difficulties at the beach.
Four reels were used,
and several beltmen went out three times before all were
brought to safety.
A large crowd had been
bathing on a sandbank about 200 yards from the shore.
The receding tide
suddenly caused the bank to collapse and men,
women and children were
left struggling in the water.
A strong current quickly
carried them out a considerable distance and many
signalled for help.
Surf boards were immediately
paddled to those in need, who clung to them until help
arrived.
"We got them all in
safely.
It could have been much worse, but fortunately most of
them kept calm when they saw help coming," said the
vice-captam of the surf
club (G. Glenfield) to-night.
Reg. Matthews, captain
of North Bondi Surf
Club, figured in a brilliant rescue.
He fought through a fairly heavy sea at North Bondi to
bring in Miss M. Burrell (19), of Bondi.
She was unconscious for 30
minutes.
Miss Burrell got into
difficulties when a huge wave overturned a rubber float
on, which she was surfing.
She was swept into a channel and carried out.
By rescuing a surfer at North Cronulla
beach Malvern George (17), of Bexley, was himself almost
drowned.
He was assisting to
bring in 12 people, who had been caught in the undertow,
when a lifeline became entangled in his legs.
Handicapped by his
patient he was unable to free himself, and was dragged to
the beach with his head under water.
Reelmen did not notice
George's predicament, and George was unconscious when picked
up.
Resuscitation methods
were applied for 20 minutes on the beach, and carbon
dioxide was administered on the way to hospital.
His condition
to-night was reported to be satisfactory.
