Hilo News

During the high surf of last week, several of our native men  gave an exhibition of their skill, in riding the wild surf horse.
They started from the point off Waianuenue street and made a landing on the sands near Richardson's store.
They did fairly well; but the present generation have not the skill and daring of the old times.
Even it is rare to see a first class surfboard.

 A Bold Dash for Liberty.
A TWENTY MILES SWIM.

THURSDAY ISLAND, Monday.-
The Albatross has returned from a trip to Forbes Island after escorting the Sub-collector of Customs (Mr. Hennessy) on a visit to tho beche-de-mer station.
He reports that when he reached Forbes Island he found the natives engaged had deserted unknown to the European.
Afterward, when about six miles from Forbes, ho espied a native swimming in the water unsupported by anything.
He put the Albatross about, and came up close to the man, and lowered a boat ; but was unable to capture the native, who continually dived like a duck, only putting his head above water occasionally to get air.
Two men were stationed at the Albatross masthead ; but they eventually lost sight of the native.
The search was of a particularly lively sort, the native on one occasion diving under tho Albatross, whose engine stopped.
The search lasted about an hour before the native was lost to sight.
He must have been in the water since the previous afternoon.
The Albatross spoke to the schooner Lancashire Lass when coming home.
The latter reported having found a man swimming about 20 miles from Forbes, but were unable to capture the native, who was picked up by the Archer and brought here.
He states that he and his son started to swim home.
The latter was drowned during the night.
The other two natives evidently followed the example, but declined to be captured for fear of punishment, they having
deserted.

ITEMS FROM HlLO
(From Hilo Record, July 22.)

...
The surf bathing last Wednesday morning was witnessed by a few of the townspeople.
The surf was not as high as it might be for riding, but some good waves came in, and some very expert riding was done.
Why could not this sport be renewed?
A little interest on the part of the people here might induce the younger natives to take up the bathing with as much vigor as in olden times.

Christchurch Swimming Club. -
Two hours' amusement was afforded at the West Christchurch school baths on the occasion of the annual display given by the members of the Club.
Among the spectators were a number of ladies.
The arrangements were excellently carried out by the Committee under Captain A. Francis.
The programme began with a display of springboard diving, in which the antics of Mr G. Jackson caused much merriment.
The tub race in heats was won by H. Laurenson, most of the competitors coming to grief in their attempts to navigate their unwieldy craft.
A series of fifty yards scratch races resulted in. a victory for J. Crummie, and the Sub-Captain W. R. Sneddon won the 25yds electric dash.
D. H. Cashbolt won the 50yds steeplechase, Crummie and Jewisa won the pick-a-back race, and Merrie the 50yds back race.
The leapfrog race, African surf-board race, rescue from drowning, all served to show the proficiency of the members.
Mr W. R. Sneddon won considerable applause by plunging 49ft 2in.
The match at water polo between teams from the rival Clubs, East and West Christchurch brought the programme to a close.
This resulted in a win for the Christchurch Club by two goals to one. Cheers being given for the Christchurch Club the proceedings terminated.
