1. Whaler 1107 would be the bigger repair job of the two,
and perhaps beyond unskilled workers and probably would
extend to two years work to repair
it, only using spare time. Whaler 1107 would
need a new backbone (Keel ft Stern post) and at least 30
timbers need to be renewed fell length. Garboard strake end
at least eight full length planks to be renewed on
Starboard side, while on the Port side, at least seven
planks full length to be renewed. So there would not
be much left as a foundation to encourage general repairs.
Actually on looking
at the construction I believe the boat has| been made by
outside contract. It does not follow
the Garden Island type of construction. It would need a set
crew of workers to be on the job full time for 4 months to
achieve success. As I do not
recommend repairs to 1107 under your set-up at Penguin, I
have not listed the other defects beyond what has been
mentioned. 2. Whaler 872 ,
would be a better proposition. Gunwhales .capping,
timbers backbone all can be saved. Planks can be
repaired one by one without a major destruction in.pulling
out defeats to gain a foundation to commence the repair. I suggest the
removal and re-seating of the trunking in order to be well
assured of water tightness. We are talking of a
vessel of 42 years old a»nd no doubt out of use for many years. On completion of|
repairs, all fastenings in original planking to be
rehardened. Don't forget, rare
tools such as rove punches, rove sets, dollies, rebate
plane land knifes, steam box, copper nails, roves etc have to be
considered. All paint to be burnt off,
internal & external. Stem & stern
post ceo be saved. Stem & Stern
post scarphs to keel to be re-tightened. Drop Keel trunking
to be removed for; (a) to be reseated., (b) to get at
Garboard strake at hog for proper hardening of fastenings. Keel & hog
should be okay.., nil replacement. On completion of
repairs it would be best to caulk with a couple of threads
of cotton all plank ends edge at rabbit line. Broken thwarts to
be renewed Repair stretchers
if available or replace New bottom boards
to be constructed All timbers
(ribs) appear to be good....nil repairs. As all the timber
work (side benches, capping etc) has been painted, it
would be best to repaint on completion. To bring back to
raw timber (general in whalers) would mean total
replacement and an enormous job. Unnecessary for
appearance only.

NAM 34/1/4 21 August 1991 Mrs. Vera Hatton 8 Watt Street Huskisson NSW 2548 Dear Vera, As discussed during our
recent conversation please find enclosed a copy of the report,
concerning two Montague whalers; The report was compiled
by the Senior Technical Instructor Shipwright from HMAS
NIRIMBA in late 1988. Essentially, whaler 107
is almost beyond repair. Whaler 872 requires
extensive (and costly) repair and is likely to be in. a
similar state by now to 1107. The repair to 872 would
need to be professionally supervised arid would be very
expensive but 1107 could possibly be 'spares' for 872. Should you wish to
'acquire' these whalers on behalf of the Lady Denman Heritage
Complex, may Isuggest you write to;
CMDR C.F. George RAN. Commanding Officer HMAS Penguin Naval Post Office

I have spoken to CMDR

Dear
Commander George,
I received a letter 28/8/91 from G.E Company Commander
RAN Museum Director of Naval Aviation Muiseum at
Albatross enclosing a report concerning two monague
whalers.
The Lady Denman heritage Complex at Huskisson is very
interested in restoring at least one of these whalers
under the supervision of Mr Alf Settree our honorary
shipwright.
Alf is 4th generation boat builder; now retired &
built 30 ships at Huskisson from 1932-1979.
I showed the report compiled by the senior technical
ship wright from Nirinda, its Alf & he is keen for
us to see the condition for ourselves & make
whatever arrangements are necessary.
I am suggesting Tuesday 17th September 1991, anytime
after 11.00 as we have three hours to travel to Sydney.
The party would consist of Alf Settree shipwright,
myself Vera Hatton, Mr Gavin Hughes, museum designer and
Keith Moore, treasurer.
We would need to know if this date & time would be
suitable, where we would need to go to see the whalers
& what condition would be attached if we were able
tp go ahead and restore them.
Many thanks, Yours
faithfully, (Mrs)

Naval PO BALMORAL NSW 2091 Dear Commander George My wife Vera has just
returned from having inspected the two montague whale boats
at.HMAS Penguin.
She was accompanied by Mr Alf Settree, retired Shipwright and
Keith Moore, Treasurer of the Lady Denman Heritage Complex. They were delighted to
see the whale boats were not in as bad a condition as they had
expected and we would like the two whalers at the Lady Denman
Complex to be fully restored and displayed. These are exactly the
same whalers as were used at Jervis Bay Naval College for
training young officers. We have a photograph taken 15 June
1920, when the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII visited the
college at Jervis Bay. He is landing on the wharf and the two
whale boats are on the davit on the wharf. We understand you would
be able to organise the loading of the two boats on to a truck
at HMAS Penguin and would also be able to organise delivery to
the Lady Denman site. We will have organised
at the Lady Denman Complex lifting appliances and personnel to
assist on the date to be arranged.
As usual, the Navy's attention
to detail and hospitality was "spot on". Many thanks on behalf
of my wife and the other delegates from the Lady Denman
Heritage Complex on the occasion of their visit to HMAS

One of the two whalers you denoted to the Lady Denman
Heritage complex is in the process of beign restored by the
pupils of Vincentia School under the guidance of alf
Settree, an experienced & retired boat builder.
This project is causing great community interest and it is
wonderful to see something is finally happening with the
whalers.
It will be under shelter shortly for the period of
restoration & is mounted on a keelhold & work has
commenced.
One of the whalers when we received it was stripped of all
the brasswork & the complete rudder is missing.
Where these items removed & stored at the base?
If so, if it is possible to get any of the brasswork &
the rudder?
If you don’t have these do you have any idea where we could
obtain suitable brass work?
Could you also give us the date the whalers were built &
where, & any history of where they were used?
The number W407 is carved into the woodwork near the rudder
post.
This restoration has fired the community with excitement.

Dear Sir,
Further to our conversation of
20th instant, I would like to confirm the desire of
assistance from the R.A.N, in particular your command
H.M.A.S. Creswell, in the endeavour of pupils of Vincentia
Public School to fully restore a former R.A.N. 27ft.
Montague Whaler.
This whaleboat
was formerly stationed at H.M.A.S. Penguin in
Sydney and was offered to the Lady Denman Maritime Museum at
Huskisson.
As a joint community project the pupils of Vincentia Public
School now have the boat in their school grounds and are the
active restorers under the guidance and instruction of the
last of the timber boat builders in the Jervis Bay area Mr
Alfred Settree who was apprenticed in his fathers (sic)
Huskisson shipyard in 1930 as a shipwright. We have at this
point in time, through the generiosity (sic) of local
business organisations managed to crane and transport the
boat to the school grounds, obtain timber from a local
mill to support it off the ground on Keel blocks and
to adequately protect it from the elements in the form of a
shed, and we have been assured any timber required for items
such as ribs or planks etc will be forthcoming, so
as you can readily see we are well advanced with this
inovative (sic)and educational project.
We are in possession of the original plans and
specifications and Mrs Vera Hatton, Curator of the
Museum is researching the boats (sic) history. We have very quickly
and efficiently reached the point where actual
restoration of the boat is upon us and we are
almost totally lacking in the necessary
tools and equipment to continue on with the
project, our appeal to you is one of urgent assistance on
behalf of the children of Vincentia Public School for that
equipment.
I list the following items for your consideration.

The RoyalAustralian Navy has a long and proud historical
connection with Jervis Bmyf H.M.A.S.
Creswell in particular, the Lady Denman
Maritime Museum has in its possession a photograph which was
taken on 15th June, 1920, when the Prince of Wales,
Edward Vlll visited the college known then as H.M.A.S.
Franklin. He is shown landing on
the wharf and two whaleboats of exactly the same type are
pictured swinging on davits on the wharf. The ultimate aim of the
school and the Museum is to place this Whaler in its restored
condition back on permanent public display at the Museum
at Huskisson, with a suitably inscribed brass plague giving
credit to the childrens (sic)
efforts and an enlarged version of that historical photo
suspended above the boat. We sincerely trust you
will give favourable consideration to our urgent appeal
for your help in bringing this project to fruition and and
thus publicly maintaining the R.A.N.'s hertiage connected with
Jervis Bay. Yours faithfully, Rex Williams Committeeman

This is one of two whalers
donated to the] Lady Denman Heritage in 1992 (in need of
complete restoration) by Commander George, Commanding Officer
of HMAS Penguin, based at Balmoral built in Fremantle in 1945
constructed for use in the Navy's Training of Midshipmen, an
essential part of their basic training in seamanship. The Whaler is 27ft in length and
has a beam of 6ft 4 inches and is fitted with a mast sail and
an adjustable centre board, to allow sailing in shallow waters
and for fine tuning of sailing. Restoration
Project A proposal by Rex Williams
(members LDHC Committee) to Mrs Narelle Harding, Principal of
Vincentia Public School to allow Students a the school to
restore the Whaler, under the supervision of Alf Settree, our
resident boat builder, Rex Williams and school co-ordinator
Alan Baiton, resulted in the proposal being agreed to.
Arrangements were made to have John Taylor with his crane to
lift the Whaler onto John Gough's truck and transport it from
LDHC to Vincentia Public School in April 1993. The transfer of the whaler was
videoed by TV Journalist Steve Barnes. Armed with scrapers and
screwdrivers etc. supplied by the Navy's HMAS Creswell, the
students undertook the laborious task of cleaning out the
bottom of the boat of leaves, sand debris, the scraping off of
many layers of old weather hardened paint, repairs to the
planking, copper riveting of new planking, and finally
sandpapering the entire boat in preparation for undercoating
and at least two finishing coats of marine gloss enamel.
As no brass
fittings came with the Whaler it became necessary to locate
them.
However, these fittings became
available when another whaler, (this time from Albatross
Aviation Museum) was offered to Alf Settree, and when delivered to the
school complete with all brass fittings required to complete
the restoration. A period of two
years had been allowed for the Restoration to be completed,
however due to the enthusiasm, dedication and combined efforts
of all those involved and not forgetting Alf Settree, Alan
Baiton and Rex Williams' inspiration to the students, the
restoration of the Whaler was completed in less than 12
months. The School Co-ordinator of the
project Alan Baiton said that the whole effort has been a
great team effort and a rewarding experience to all the
students taking part. Montague
Whaler
restored Rex Williams advised the LDHC
Committee that the Whalers restoration was completed on Friday
22 February 1994. The Whaler was picked up from the
school on 6 March 1994 with the assistance of John Gough and
John Taylor ind returned to LDHC. A handing over ceremony at the
school was to be organised at a date to be advised. The
Handing
Over Ceremony The Ceremony was organised by Mrs
Narelle Harding, Principal of Vincentia Public School and was
held on Friday 22 April 1994 at the school. The
Official
Party
The following people and
students were involved in the restoration of the Montague
Whaler now on display at the LDHC. Alf Settree

Hi Graham I understand that
you have a Montague whaler. I have one and I
have an opportunity to have some repair and restoration
work done to it. There is a tight
deadline to the work because it is being done in
preparation for a film on Gallipoli. Out boat will land
troops to invade a beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Would you be able
to help me with some photographs of your boat or some
plans of it? We need to replicate the floors inside the
vessel. Ideally I would like: - Plans of the boat - Photographs of
the floors inside the boat - Photographs of
the underneath of the floor removed from the boat
- Lots of
internal photographs to explain the purpose of some
metal fittings we have under the seats
- Photographs and measurements
of oars to enable us to replicate them.I know I am asking
for a lot but would be very grateful for whatever you can
provide. Regards, Kevin South Australian
