Introduction
Sub-titled Spectacular views of
spectacular surf, beginning on page 62 this article
features dramatic photographs of Sunset Beach by Dr. Don
James and Peter L. Dixon.
Most likely shot over the winter of 1966-1967, the water
shots are probably the work of Dr James. Surfers include Eddie Aikau, Jock Sutherland,
Jose Angel, Ben Apia, and Felipe Pomar.
Shown riding Sunset as a natural footer, Jock Sutherland was
ambidextrous and often photographed as a goofy-foot,
particularly at Pipeline.
Don James published Surfing San
Onofre to Point Dume 1936-1942 in 1998.
Peter L. Dixon wrote The
Complete Book of Surfing (1965,
2001), Men and Waves (1966), Where
the Surfers Are(1968),
and Men
Who Ride Mountains (1969,
2001).
Other articles in this edition included Leonard da Vinci's
"lost" notebooks (page 20), Scrounge of Australia- The Shark (page 32), the Other Culture-
Underground Art (page 50), and a preview of the New
swimsuits - bold and bare (page 76).
A sub-heading for the Other Culture article on page 56 reads Pot-seed
pancakes and hashish cookies. While possibly tasty, the pot-seed pancakes were unlikely
to induce a similar state of intoxication as the hashish
cookies. Page
