DESIGN HISTORY The board was most probably shaped, sprayed and glassed at Goodtime Surfboards, 28 Boulton Street Kirra, Queensland in mid-1974. Owl Chapman, along with a contingent of fellow Hawaiian surfers lured to Australia by the potential of financial reward in professional contests. In May that year, the first Coke contest in Sydney attracted Reno Abellira, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Gerry Lopez, Owl Chapman, and Jeff Hakman with prizes totalling $7,000. The $2,900 first prize was won by Goodtime Surfboard's resident star, Michael Peterson, following his wins at the Australian Titles and at Bells Beach. While in Sydney, some of the Hawaiians shaped boards for local manufacturers and subsequently boards to their design were produced under license; Lopez at Bennett's and Reno and Barry Kanaiaupuni (BK) at McCoy Surfboards. In Queensland, Neilsen Bros, produced the Jeff Hakman Model and Owl Chapman shaped boards for Goodtime. COMMENTS: One of the earliest example of flyers, sometime known as wings, these breaks in the the template and rails appear behind the fin. Gradually they moved forward on single fins but on the twin-fins of the late 1970s they once more trailed the fin(s). The leg-rope block was probably added post-production. Owl Chapman, Waimea Bay. |
